What is OBP?

Ocean Bound Plastic referred to as OBP, OBP is plastic waste that is not properly managed and is left in the environment, where it is transported to the ocean by rain, wind, tides, rivers, and floods.

Ocean Bound Plastic refers to discarded plastic waste of all sizes (microplastics, mesoplastics and macroplastics) found in communities within 50 kilometers of the coast or in areas where waste management is non-existent or very inefficient. Plastic waste in landfills or managed dumps is not considered OBP, but plastic waste in uncontrolled informal dumps is considered OBP if it is within 50 km of the coast.

OBP has defined 2 more stringent subcategories of Ocean Bound Plastic to focus more precisely on the points of Ocean Bound Plastic leakage in the ocean.

A) Waterway OBP: Waste plastic garbage located in the river or within 200m from both sides of the river.

Our waterway category extends beyond a distance of 50 kilometers from the coast simply because rivers in the form of macroplastics (when floating) or microplastics (from microplastic degradation or microplastic sources) may carry plastics to the ocean for distances greater than 50km .

B) Coastline OBP: Waste plastic waste is located within 200m landward from the highest tide line and within 100m seaward from the lowest tide line.
